You can work from your own home kitchen, a dedicated photography studio, or any space where you can create professional-grade food images. Please note: This opportunity is open to US applicants only, emphasizing our commitment to local talent.

For the right candidate, there is significant potential for these hours to increase in the future, growing with our content needs and your capabilities. This flexible schedule is designed to integrate seamlessly with your lifestyle.

Key Responsibilities of Our Assistant Food Photographer
As our Assistant Food Photographer, your primary mission will be to capture irresistibly delicious recipe photos that perfectly align with the signature minimalist, bright, and fresh style of Gimme Some Oven. This multifaceted role will involve a blend of creative and practical tasks, ensuring every step of the visual production process is meticulously handled:
- Pre-planning & Creative Direction: You will collaborate closely with Ali, the founder and creative force behind Gimme Some Oven, on a weekly basis. This involves brainstorming, planning, and designing each recipe shoot, ensuring that the visual concept, props, and overall aesthetic perfectly complement the recipe and brand identity. Your input in shaping the visual narrative of our content will be highly valued, contributing directly to the blog’s engaging presence.
- Ingredient Sourcing & Preparation: A crucial hands-on component of the role involves independently managing the grocery shopping for each recipe shoot. This requires a discerning eye for ingredient quality and presentation, ensuring you pick up everything needed to bring the recipes to life visually and authentically.
- Professional Photography: Utilizing your own professional camera equipment, you will be responsible for shooting high-quality, professional food photos. This includes understanding optimal lighting conditions (often backlit for that signature glow), mastering composition, achieving perfect depth of field, and capturing various angles to showcase the dish in its most appealing form. We are looking for images that evoke a sense of warmth, freshness, and deliciousness, characteristic of our blog’s inviting style.
- Expert Photo Editing: Following the shoot, you will meticulously edit photos using industry-standard software such as Adobe Lightroom and/or Photoshop. This involves precise color correction, exposure adjustments, expert cropping, and other advanced post-processing techniques to achieve the bright, high-contrast, and high-saturation look that defines Gimme Some Oven’s consistent visual brand. A strong, proven understanding of these tools and our aesthetic is essential to maintain our consistent visual quality.
This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute significantly to a leading food blog, enhancing its visual appeal and engaging millions of readers with your photographic talent. We are looking for someone who is not just a photographer, but a visual storyteller passionate about food, eager to contribute to a vibrant online community.
How to Apply for the Assistant Food Photographer Position
If you’re excited by the prospect of joining Gimme Some Oven and believe your skills and passion align with our vision, we invite you to submit a comprehensive application. We are committed to finding the perfect fit for this essential role and ask that you carefully follow the application instructions outlined below. Your attention to detail in this process will be highly indicative of your fit for our team, demonstrating your professionalism and commitment.
Please send an email with the exact subject line “Assistant Photographer – [Your Full Name]” to [email protected]. Your application email should include the following three crucial components, presented clearly and concisely:
1. Your Original Photography Portfolio (6-8 Photos)
To assess your photographic style and technical capabilities, we require a small portfolio showcasing your ability to capture an existing Gimme Some Oven recipe. This is your chance to demonstrate how you can translate our brand’s aesthetic through your lens, proving your understanding of our visual language.
- Recipe Selection: Please choose from one of the following Gimme Some Oven recipes. These specific recipes have been chosen as examples of older posts that we are keen to have visually updated, offering you a clear opportunity to showcase your improvement and adherence to our current style:
- 5-Ingredient Easy White Chicken Chili
- Barbacoa Tacos
- Beef Enchiladas
- Falafel
- Styling Requirements: All photos should be styled on a solid white surface. This helps us evaluate your ability to create a clean, minimalist backdrop, which is a hallmark of the Gimme Some Oven style. A simple piece of white matte foam core board (typically available for $4-5 at art supply stores), white poster board, or even a clean, solid white countertop would be perfectly suitable for this purpose.
- Submission Guidelines for Photos: Shoot and edit 6-8 files of your chosen recipe, ensuring they are entirely consistent with the current photography style found in recent Gimme Some Oven blog posts.
- What We Are Specifically Looking For:
- A distinct photography style that seamlessly matches current Gimme Some Oven photos. This includes bright, well-lit compositions, often backlit, with high contrast and vibrant saturation. We also prefer minimal backgrounds and props to keep the focus squarely on the food itself, emphasizing its delicious appeal.
- Expertly styled food: We encourage you to get creative and actively improve upon the food styling evident in the older photos of the chosen recipe. Show us your vision for making the dish truly appealing and contemporary.
- An irresistibly delicious “hero” (top) photo: This single image should be powerful enough to immediately captivate viewers and make them want to try the recipe.
- At least two compelling process photos: These should clearly highlight specific ingredients, key cooking steps, or important preparation stages of the recipe, adding instructional value and a sense of progression.
- Photos that have been professionally edited in either Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom. It is critical that you submit your edited photos along with their original raw files (or .psd files if applicable), allowing us to see both your finished work and the starting point. This helps us understand your editing process and capabilities thoroughly.
- What Not to Worry About:
- Having specific dishes or props: While we often shoot on white dishes, please simply use what you have available. Your creativity with existing resources is more important than specific prop acquisition at this stage.
- Adding text overlays to the photos: We handle all text overlays internally, so please submit your images without any added text.
- What We Are Specifically Looking For:
2. Your Professional Resume
Please include an up-to-date resume that highlights your relevant experience, particularly in photography, food styling, and any remote work or blog-related contributions. Showcase your technical skills, software proficiencies (especially Lightroom and Photoshop), and any past roles where you demonstrated creativity, reliability, and meticulous attention to detail. We are looking for evidence of a strong work ethic and a passion for visual storytelling.
3. Your Preferred Hourly Rate
Clearly state your preferred hourly rate for this part-time remote position. This will help us in the selection process as we seek to align with talented professionals who understand the value of their expertise.
Important Deadline: All applications must be received by January 25, 2019. We recommend submitting your application well in advance of the deadline to ensure it is thoroughly reviewed.
A Heartfelt Thanks and What Happens Next!
We extend our sincerest gratitude in advance to every talented individual who takes the time and effort to apply for this Assistant Food Photographer position. Your interest in contributing to the Gimme Some Oven community means a great deal to us, and we truly appreciate the dedication required to prepare such a comprehensive application. ♡
We are genuinely excited to review your applications and discover the next visual storyteller who will help us continue inspiring home cooks everywhere with stunning culinary imagery.
