Greenwich Village Culinary Journey

An Unforgettable Culinary Journey Through Greenwich Village: A Foods of New York Tour Review

Greenwich Village Food Tour

There’s nothing quite like the vibrant energy of New York City, and on my latest visit back to the Big Apple, I was determined to dive headfirst into its legendary culinary scene. For the day’s main event, I immersed myself in the charming, historic streets of Greenwich Village, embarking on an incredible Foods of New York Tour. What followed was an afternoon filled with delightful discoveries, fascinating history, and, of course, an abundance of exquisite food. It wasn’t just a meal; it was an experience, a journey through the heart and soul of one of NYC’s most beloved neighborhoods.

For three glorious hours, our small group of about ten fellow food enthusiasts meandered through the picturesque Village alongside our absolutely hilarious and incredibly knowledgeable tour guide. Her passion for New York’s history and its diverse gastronomy was infectious. Every corner turned brought a new story, a fresh insight into the area’s rich past, and another mouth-watering sample. The time truly flew by, filled with laughter, interesting facts, and unforgettable flavors, making it an utterly enjoyable and deeply satisfying adventure.

First Stop: A Slice of NYC History at Joe’s Pizza

Joe's Pizza Greenwich Village

Our culinary exploration began with a true New York institution: pizza. Or, as many locals affectionately call it, a “pizza pie.” Our meeting point was none other than Joe’s Pizza, a Greenwich Village legend that has been serving up iconic slices since 1974. Stepping inside, you’re immediately transported to a classic NYC pizzeria, with its bustling counter, the aroma of baking crusts, and the undeniable hum of a place that has perfected its craft over decades. Joe’s is renowned for its unbelievably delicious, thin-crust Sicilian pizzas, a testament to the idea that sometimes, simplicity reigns supreme. Here, toppings aren’t merely secondary; they’re often unnecessary. The magic lies in the perfect marriage of a crisp, thin crust, a vibrant crushed-tomato sauce, and a delicate sprinkling of melted cheese.

Joe's Pizza Slice

Each of us was handed a generously sized slice, and the tradition dictates you fold it “NY style” before taking that first blissful bite. The experience was everything I’d hoped for and more. The crust was perfectly chewy yet crispy, the sauce tangy and fresh, and the cheese just enough to bind it all together without overpowering the other elements. I could have easily devoured the entire pie, but with so many more delights awaiting us, we reluctantly moved on, already planning a return visit for another taste of this quintessential New York classic.

Faicco’s: A Century of Italian Delights

Faicco's Italian Specialties

Our next stop was a true Italian food heaven: Faicco’s. This beloved family-owned establishment has been a cornerstone of the Greenwich Village community since 1900, carrying on a legacy of crafting exceptional Italian foods. Walking into Faicco’s feels like stepping back in time, into a vibrant deli brimming with authentic flavors and generations of tradition. They specialize in a breathtaking array of Italian delicacies, making seven different types of homemade sausages and fresh mozzarella (along with its smoked counterpart) from scratch, every single day. The commitment to quality and heritage is palpable in every corner of the shop.

Faicco's Rice Balls

Our sample from Faicco’s turned out to be one of the most memorable—and least expected—favorites of the entire tour: the “rice balls.” From the outside, they resembled small, golden-brown hushpuppies, perfectly breaded and fried. But one bite revealed a truly surprising and utterly delicious interior. Inside, we found a warm, gooey mixture of perfectly seasoned rice and melted mozzarella, a harmonious blend of textures and comforting flavors that was simply divine. Seriously, if you ever find yourself in New York, a stop at Faicco’s for one of these incredible rice balls is an absolute must. They are a true testament to the simple, profound joy of well-made comfort food.

A Glimpse into Bohemian History: The Cornelia Street Cafe & Palma

The Cornelia Street Cafe

Our journey then took a brief, delightful detour past The Cornelia Street Cafe. More than just a charming eatery, this spot holds a special place in the bohemian heart of Greenwich Village. While renowned for its famously diverse menu that has satisfied countless diners over the years, it has gained additional fame more recently for a very specific past employee: none other than Lady Gaga herself. It’s a wonderful reminder of how many legends have walked and lived in this artistic neighborhood, making their early marks in its cozy cafes and hidden venues.

Cornelia Street Cafe Basement

Beyond its culinary offerings and celebrity connections, The Cornelia Street Cafe also boasts a fantastic little venue in its basement. This intimate space has long been a hub for creativity, regularly hosting an eclectic array of musicians, poets, and performers. It perfectly embodies the artistic spirit of Greenwich Village, offering a stage for both emerging and established talents to share their craft with appreciative audiences.

Palma Restaurant Entrance

Just across the street, we discovered another culinary gem, a sweet local Italian-French restaurant called “Palma.” From the moment I stepped inside, I was captivated by the gorgeous rustic French decor, which exuded an old-world charm and elegance. However, it was when they led us through to the sunny back patio that I truly fell in love with the place. Though capturing a perfect photo was challenging, the patio was an explosion of color and life, with stunning flowers blooming everywhere. It felt like a secret garden, a perfect, quaint little oasis in the middle of the city, ideal for savoring a beautiful meal in a tranquil setting.

Cauliflower Palma

Our tour group was privileged to walk past this enchanting patio and directly into the small back kitchen, where we sampled one of the chef’s renowned specialties: “Cauliflower Palma.” This dish was an exquisite blend of flavors and textures, featuring perfectly cooked cauliflower, beautifully caramelized shallots, crunchy roasted pine nuts, sweet currants, savory bread crumbs, and a drizzle of fragrant Tuscan olive oil. It was a sweet and savory masterpiece, a symphony for the palate. The complexity and balance of flavors were so compelling that I’m already planning an (attempted) recreation of this recipe in my own kitchen very soon. It was an absolute delight, showcasing the innovative spirit of Greenwich Village’s culinary scene.

An Unexpected Delight: Asian-Inspired Vegan at Soy and Sake

Soy and Sake Restaurant

Our culinary compass then swung eastward as we arrived at “Soy and Sake,” an inviting Asian-inspired vegetarian restaurant that also boasts an extensive vegan menu. This stop marked our designated lunch break, offering a chance to sit down, recharge, and savor a different dimension of Greenwich Village’s diverse food landscape. The transition from Italian flavors to Asian-inspired plant-based cuisine highlighted the incredible versatility and openness of the neighborhood’s dining options.

Soy and Sake Bento Box

Our meal for the day was a beautifully presented bento box, a visual and culinary treat. It comprised a refreshing portion of crisp cucumbers and vibrant seaweed salad, a perfectly pan-fried vegetarian gyoza, and a generous serving of fried rice topped with BBQ “pork.” Now, my friends and family can attest that nine times out of ten, my go-to order at a Chinese restaurant is pork fried rice. So, I approached their vegetarian interpretation with a healthy dose of curiosity, if not a little skepticism. But I kid you not, it was absolutely stellar. The plant-based “pork,” whatever soy-based product it was, had been marinated and seasoned so impeccably that it genuinely rivaled—and perhaps even surpassed—some of the best BBQ pork I’ve ever tasted. The fried rice was fresh and flavorful, complemented perfectly by the savory gyoza and the cool, crunchy cucumbers. While I wasn’t a huge fan of the seaweed (though that’s more a personal preference than a critique of the dish), the overall experience was a testament to how incredibly delicious and satisfying plant-based cuisine can be. C’est la vie for the seaweed, but a definite culinary triumph for Soy and Sake.

Sweet Endings at Milk and Cookies Bakery

Milk and Cookies Bakery

After our savory lunch, anticipation for dessert was high, and our next stop did not disappoint. We made our way to Milk and Cookies, a relatively new but rapidly trending hotspot in Greenwich Village. This bakery, founded and owned by the dean of the French Culinary Institute, promised an elevated sweet experience, and it delivered on every front. The very concept—simple, comforting, yet expertly crafted—is what makes it so appealing.

Stepping inside, you’re enveloped in the most heavenly aroma of freshly baked goods. The place is an absolute treasure trove of sweetness, overflowing with an impressive array of treats. From classic cookies to creamy ice cream, innovative cookies-and-ice-cream sandwiches, delightful whoopie pies, refreshing milkshakes, malts, and sundaes, there’s something to satisfy every sweet tooth imaginable. The vibrant display case alone is enough to make your eyes widen and your mouth water.

Chocolate Chip Cookies

Our “samples” for the day were far more generous than expected. Each of us received a truly massive chocolate chip cookie, served warm and fresh from the oven. Despite feeling quite full from our previous stops, every single bite of those cookies miraculously disappeared. The rich, buttery flavor, combined with the melting chocolate chips and the perfect chewy texture, was simply irresistible. It’s no surprise that their famous recipe is now set to be available at Whole Foods locations nationwide, allowing more people to experience this little piece of cookie heaven. Keep an eye out for their new mixes in the cookie aisle – pure yum!

Village Charm and Pop Culture: Beyond the Bites

While we could have happily lingered in that delicious-smelling cookie paradise all day, the tour continued. We packed up our bags (and our remaining cookie crumbs) and set off to walk off some of those delightful calories, exploring more of Greenwich Village’s unique charm and unexpected landmarks. Our tour guide, a treasure trove of local lore, pointed out various fun local spots and points of interest, including a few celebrity houses, adding another layer of intrigue to our stroll.

Among the quirky highlights was this truly remarkable sight: the smallest “house” in NYC. It’s an incredibly narrow structure, reportedly just 9.5 feet wide and 30 feet deep. The fact that this minuscule piece of real estate recently resold for an astonishing $2.3 million perfectly encapsulates the dizzying reality of the New York property market. It’s a fascinating architectural anomaly that prompts you to do the math and marvel at the value placed on every square inch in this city.

Smallest House in NYC

And while I generally don’t get overly excited about celebrity homes, I must admit a genuine thrill, a slight giddiness even, when we passed by a particular building. The facade has changed somewhat over the years, but does anyone recognize it? Anyone? Anyone? Yes, you guessed it! It’s the exterior of the apartment building featured in “Friends”!!!!!!! Ah, the nostalgia! I readily confess that show held a very dear place in my heart for an entire decade, and I might still own all ten seasons on DVD. (“I’ll be there for you…”) Seeing that iconic landmark in person, even with its updated look, was a delightful trip down memory lane and a fun connection to pop culture history.

Cheese Lover’s Paradise: Murray’s Cheese Shop

Okay, moving on from sitcom nostalgia to serious culinary business! Our next stop was the one I was perhaps most excited about when I first reviewed the tour itinerary: Murray’s Cheese Shop. The name itself promises pure bliss for any cheese aficionado, and stepping inside confirmed it. Murray’s isn’t just a shop; it’s a legendary institution, a veritable temple of cheese that has delighted New Yorkers for generations.

Beyond an impressive selection of gourmet olives, artisanal homemade sausages, and various other Italian specialties, what truly dominates the senses here is the sheer, overwhelming presence of cheese. Everywhere you look, there’s cheese…

…more cheese…

…and even more cheese. It’s a symphony of textures, aromas, and colors, from towering wheels of aged Parmesan to delicate, creamy soft cheeses. Truly, heaven for anyone who appreciates the finer things in dairy.

Murray's Cheese Samples

Despite having zero room left in our stomachs, the excitement to sample these exquisite offerings was palpable. Our curated tasting included a wonderfully complex drunken goat’s milk cheese, a nutty and firm Parmesan Reggiano, and a unique Biave (a delightful Italian semi-hard cheese) cheese. These were complemented by a slice of homemade salami, a savory cheesy-bread bite, and a rich, briny Green Nyon olive from France. Each component was as meticulously chosen as it was delicious, offering a perfect medley of flavors and textures. The expert pairing of these items showcased the incredible depth and artistry behind Murray’s selection, and every bite was just as good, if not better, than it looked.

A Grand Finale: Rocco’s Pasticceria and the Perfect Cannoli

Rocco's Pasticceria Exterior

Finally, our incredible culinary journey through Greenwich Village culminated at our last stop: Rocco’s Pasticceria. This classic Italian pastry shop, a beloved Village staple since 1972, holds a prestigious reputation. It is widely credited with serving the “best cannolis in NY,” a claim that immediately piques one’s interest. What sets them apart is their dedication to freshness and tradition; they even fill the cannolis “right before your eyes,” ensuring each bite is as crisp and creamy as possible. And it’s absolutely true – watching the pastry chefs pipe the rich filling into the delicate shells is a delightful spectacle in itself.

So, you can guess what our samples were! Each of us was treated to one of their legendary cannolis, a truly perfect ending to an afternoon of indulgence. The shell was incredibly crisp and perfectly fried, offering a satisfying crunch that gave way to a luscious, creamy ricotta filling that was sweet without being cloying. It was a flawless balance of texture and flavor, a fitting tribute to traditional Italian confectionery, and indeed, a monumental treat.
