Essential Supplies for Decorating Your Christmas Cupcakes

Before we delve into the delicious cupcake recipe, let’s ensure you have all the necessary tools and ingredients for decorating. Having your supplies ready will make the process smooth and enjoyable, allowing your creativity to flow freely.

  • Food Coloring: The key to vibrant holiday cupcakes! You have options here. I personally favor this natural food coloring from Color Garden because it produces a beautifully rich, vibrant green. Just be aware that it might impart a very subtle “leafy” taste. If you’re aiming for a completely neutral-tasting frosting, an artificial gel coloring, such as this green gel food coloring from Wilton, would be an excellent choice for achieving brilliant hues without altering flavor.
  • Sprinkles: Sprinkles are the festive jewelry of your cupcakes! I often use a medley mix, similar to these green metallic sprinkles. There are countless fun mixes available online that can add sparkle and texture. If you prefer natural options, this brand offers natural sprinkles free from artificial colorings, allowing you to decorate with peace of mind.
  • Piping Tips & Bags: To create those stunning professional-looking designs, a good set of piping tips and bags is invaluable. I highly recommend investing in a basic set of piping tips along with a set of disposable piping bags. For the specific Christmas tree and wreath designs shown, I used Wilton piping tip #3 (for zigzags), tip #18 (for swirled trees), and tip #199 (for star-shaped wreaths and trees).
  • Small Offset Spatula (Optional but Recommended): A small offset spatula is incredibly useful for spreading a smooth, even base layer of frosting on your cupcakes. It gives them a polished look before you add your piped decorations. However, if you don’t have one, a regular butter knife works just as well for spreading.
  • Cupcake Liners: While I opted for basic white liners for the cupcakes pictured, feel free to let your imagination run wild! Choose liners in festive colors, various materials, or fun holiday patterns to complement your decorations.

Beyond these decorating tools, you’ll, of course, need your chosen cupcake and frosting recipes. For this guide, I used Cupcake Project’s renowned vanilla cupcake recipe (a true winner, even without vanilla beans, which I rarely have on hand!). This is perfectly paired with a simple yet delicious vanilla buttercream. Remember, the beauty of baking is customization, so use whatever combination you love most!

How to Decorate These Festive Christmas Cupcakes

Once your vanilla cupcakes are baked and cooled, and your buttercream is ready, it’s time for the fun part: decorating! Divide your buttercream, leaving about one-third white and coloring the remaining two-thirds a cheerful green with your chosen food coloring. Now, let’s transform these simple treats into miniature holiday masterpieces!

  • To Create Charming Christmas Wreath Cupcakes: Begin by using an offset spatula (or a knife) to spread a thin, even base layer of white frosting over each cupcake. This creates a beautiful contrast for your green wreath. Next, with your green frosting loaded into a piping bag fitted with the Wilton #199 star tip, pipe an outer ring of small stars around the edge of the cupcake. Follow this with an inner ring of stars, creating the illusion of a full, lush wreath. Finish by adding a sprinkle of festive decorations to make your wreaths truly sparkle.
  • To Design Delightful Christmas Tree Cupcakes: Just like with the wreaths, start by spreading a thin base layer of white frosting on each cupcake using an offset spatula or knife. For the Christmas trees, you have a few creative options (refer to the very top image of this post for visual examples):
    • Star-Shaped Tree: Using the Wilton #199 star tip, pipe nine distinct green stars in a pyramid shape to form a classic Christmas tree (as seen in the bottom left example).
    • Swirled Tree: Achieve a beautifully textured tree by using the Wilton #18 star tip and gently swirling the green frosting upwards, narrowing as you go (the bottom center example).
    • Zigzag Tree: For a more whimsical look, use the Wilton #3 round tip to pipe green frosting in a continuous zigzag pattern, building it up into a tree shape.

Once your tree is formed, break off a small piece of a pretzel stick and carefully place it at the base of your green piping to serve as the tree trunk. Complete your miniature Christmas trees by showering them with colorful sprinkles, just like ornaments!

No Piping Tips? No Problem! If you don’t have piping tips, don’t let that stop your festive fun. Simply snip off a small corner of a sturdy ziplock bag to create a makeshift round tip. You can then swirl or zigzag the green frosting to form charming Christmas trees or wreaths. Alternatively, you can always spread the green frosting with a butter knife for a rustic, homemade look that’s equally delightful.

Expert Tips for Flawless Cupcake Decorating

Achieving picture-perfect Christmas cupcakes is easier than you think, especially with a few simple tricks up your sleeve. Here are some fundamental cupcake decorating tips (and yes, that pun was intended!) to ensure your festive creations turn out beautifully every time:

  • Ensure Cupcakes Are Completely Cool Before Frosting: This is perhaps the most crucial rule of cupcake decorating. If you attempt to frost cupcakes while they are still warm, the butter in your delicious buttercream will melt, causing your frosting to slide right off or become a soupy mess. Always allow your cupcakes to cool completely to room temperature. To speed up this process, you can carefully remove the cupcakes from the baking pan and transfer them to a wire rack. Placing the rack in the refrigerator for a short period can help them cool down even faster.
  • Verify Buttercream Consistency: The consistency of your buttercream is paramount for successful piping. Generally, you want a stiff-peak consistency for intricate designs. A good test is to dip a spoon into the frosting and then turn it right-side-up; the frosting should hold its shape without drooping. Before you fill an entire piping bag, add just a spoonful or two of buttercream and test it with your desired piping tip on a clean plate or parchment paper. This allows you to check if it’s too thin (needs more powdered sugar) or too thick (needs a little more heavy cream or milk) and adjust accordingly before committing.
  • Practice Your Piping Technique: Don’t be afraid to practice! Even experienced decorators often do a quick trial run. Before piping directly onto a cupcake, practice your chosen design once or twice on a clean plate or a piece of parchment paper. This helps build confidence and refine your technique. The best part? You can simply scoop up the practice icing and return it to your piping bag, so nothing goes to waste!
  • Add Sprinkles Immediately After Frosting: If your delightful design includes sprinkles, make sure to add them within 30 minutes of frosting your cupcakes. Buttercream tends to form a slight crust as it sits, and if you wait too long, your beautiful sprinkles might not adhere well and could fall off. Applying them promptly ensures they stick perfectly, adding that final touch of festive sparkle.

Description

These cute Christmas cupcakes are made with soft and fluffy vanilla cupcakes, a simple vanilla buttercream frosting, and whatever fun sprinkles or toppings you choose. See notes above for decorating instructions and supplies.

Ingredients

Vanilla Cupcake Ingredients:

  • 1 3/4 cups cake flour (not self-rising flour)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup salted butter, room temperature
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1/3 cup full-fat sour cream
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil (or canola oil)
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 2/3 cup whole milk, room temperature
  • optional: sprinkles (see note below)

Vanilla Buttercream Ingredients:

  • 1 cup salted butter, room temperature
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Instructions

To Make The Cupcakes:

  1. Prep the oven and cupcake liners. Heat oven to 350°F (180°C). Line two cupcake pans with about 16 liners total (or you can bake multiple batches with one pan).
  2. Mix together the dry ingredients. In a large mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer, whisk together cake flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt until combined.
  3. Add the butter. Add the room temperature butter and mix on medium-low speed for 3 minutes, scraping down the sides as needed. The batter should have a fine crumb texture.
  4. Whisk together the wet ingredients. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the eggs, sour cream, oil and vanilla extract until smooth.
  5. Add the wet ingredients. Add the egg mixture to the flour mixture and beat on medium-speed for 30 seconds, or until just combined. Reduce speed to low and gradually add the milk until it is just combined. The batter will be liquid.
  6. Bake. Fill the cupcake liners so that they are just over halfway full. Bake for 14 to 16 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. Transfer the pan to a wire rack and let the cupcakes cool completely to room temperature.

To Make The Buttercream:

  1. Beat the butter. Add the butter to a large mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer and beat on medium speed for 2 to 3 minutes until it is light and fluffy.
  2. Add the remaining ingredients. Add the powdered sugar, heavy cream and vanilla extract and beat on low speed for 1 minute until combined. Scrape down the sides of the bowl, then beat on medium speed for 2 more minutes until completely smooth.
  3. Adjust consistency if needed. If the buttercream seems too thin, add in 1 to 2 cups of additional powdered sugar and beat until smooth. If the buttercream seems too thick, add in 1 tablespoon of heavy cream (or more, if needed) and beat until smooth. See notes below for storage directions.

Notes

Sprinkles: I used a medley mix similar to these green metallic sprinkles (this brand has lots of fun mixes available on Amazon), but feel free to use whatever sprinkles you love best. This brand of natural sprinkles is a great option that is free of artificial colorings.

Storage instructions: Unfrosted baked cupcakes can be stored in a sealed container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Plain buttercream can be refrigerated in a sealed container for up to 1 week. To be safe, frosted cupcakes should be refrigerated in a sealed container where they can be stored for up to 5 days.

Prep time: The prep time listed in the recipe above approximates the amount of time that it may take to decorate the cupcakes, but does not include the additional time needed for the cupcakes to completely cool to room temperature, which can take anywhere from 30-60 minutes. I typically make the buttercream while the cupcakes are in the oven to save time.

Source: The cupcake recipe is ever so slightly adapted from Cupcake Project’s famous vanilla cupcake recipe that never lets me down.
