For those unaware, ALDI’s roots trace back to Germany, and one of the fantastic benefits of this heritage is the consistently high quality of German chocolate found in all their stores. I frequently share ALDI chocolate as gifts, and even my most discerning, gourmet-chocolate-loving friends unfailingly rave about its rich taste and superior quality. It was the perfect, indulgent introduction to our ALDI event, setting a sweet tone for the days ahead.

Inside the ALDI Test Kitchen: Where Culinary Magic Happens
The following morning, all the bloggers converged and journeyed a short distance to ALDI’s U.S. headquarters in Batavia, Illinois, a vibrant suburb of Chicago. Our tour commenced in their renowned test kitchen, a hub where all the culinary “magic” of ALDI products truly begins. Engaging with the professional chefs who oversee this bustling kitchen, I learned that their “magic” primarily involves extensive recipe development and rigorous taste testing. Given that roughly 90% of the products available at ALDI are exclusive private-label brands, the culinary team dedicates immense effort to meticulously test each item. Their goal is to ensure every product not only meets ALDI’s high-quality standards but also resonates deeply with consumer preferences. It sounded like an incredibly fulfilling and delicious profession!

Their jalapeño cheese, fresh mozzarella balls, and the delightful seasonal blueberry and cinnamon cheddars (often found in the “Special Buy” section) are consistently outstanding and remarkably affordable compared to other retailers. Upon entering the next kitchen, we discovered it was our turn to put on chef hats and create! The test kitchen chefs had meticulously arranged an impressive array of ALDI ingredients, challenging us to devise a creative “back-to-school” sandwich that would excite children. What made the dinner even more impressive was the creative concept behind the dishes: they were all designed with delicious leftovers in mind. For instance, delectable salmon filet leftovers could be effortlessly transformed into a savory salmon quiche the following day. One of the unanimous favorites was the stunning drink bar. After a full day at ALDI headquarters, we returned to the serene Herrington Inn & Spa. Before the sun dipped below the horizon, we decided to explore the charming town of Geneva. True to form, Amanda had already researched the town’s dessert offerings. After a pleasant stroll past various sweet shops, we unanimously decided on the extraordinary All Chocolate Kitchen.

While waiting in line for our gelato and ice cream sandwiches, we noticed an enormous tree dominating the center of the restaurant. A sign proudly declared it was made entirely of chocolate! A staggering 23-foot chocolate tree! The “All Chocolate Kitchen” moniker certainly lived up to its name.

As if the ALDI dessert bar and my peanut butter fudge gelato weren’t enough, we returned to the Inn to find our turndown service had delivered ice-cold milk and warm chocolate cookies, alongside plush, comfortable slippers and a beautifully lit fireplace. This, for me, is the epitome of luxurious comfort and the perfect end to a day filled with delicious discoveries.

After a restful night’s sleep and a delightful breakfast at the Inn, our group embarked on the next exciting phase of our ALDI experience: a comprehensive behind-the-scenes tour of a nearby ALDI store. Our insightful guide, Liz (who sported those chic red pants the day before!), led us through the aisles, providing an in-depth explanation of ALDI’s unique business model and the numerous, often ingenious, steps they implement to minimize overhead costs. For instance, I’d always noticed that ALDI products seemed to have an extra barcode or two, contributing to their famously fast checkout process. Liz revealed that ALDI products actually average *five* barcodes on their packaging! Some, like the fruit cups we saw, even feature an enormous, easily scannable barcode. Without a doubt, one of my favorite discoveries during the tour was seeing Biscoff Spread being sold as a “Special Buy.” These rotating, limited-time national brand offerings are a true highlight of ALDI shopping, alongside staple national brands like Diet Coke and Honey Nut Cheerios, which ALDI consistently stocks due to popular demand.

Unsurprisingly, our group spent the most time, and perhaps the most enthusiastic moments, in the chocolate section. The allure of high-quality, affordably priced German chocolate is simply irresistible!

It was Jenny’s inaugural visit to an ALDI store, and she wisely took the opportunity to stock up on some of their famous chocolate and other tempting treats.

I happily located my beloved Chili chocolate bars, a unique and flavorful indulgence that perfectly exemplifies ALDI’s diverse and exciting range of products.

Amanda, with her keen eye, spotted the delicious chocolate-hazelnut spread that we had sampled and loved in the Test Kitchen the day before. Seriously, if you haven’t tried it, you absolutely should!

The Ingenious Quarter Cart System
Our tour extended outside to demonstrate ALDI’s clever quarter checkout system for shopping carts. For those unfamiliar with ALDI, you essentially “rent” a cart by inserting a quarter into a slot to release it. Upon returning the cart, your quarter is promptly returned. This simple yet brilliant system effectively eliminates rogue carts in the parking lot and negates the need for employees to spend time collecting them, directly contributing to ALDI’s lower operating costs. A personal touch I love is to sometimes be a “quarter fairy” and leave the quarter for the next shopper—it’s a small gesture that always brightens someone’s day.
