No-Fuss Apple Crisp

Delicious Gluten-Free Easy Apple Crisp, perfect for fall gatherings and family desserts, made with simple ingredients. Features a crunchy oat topping and tender spiced apples.

There’s a special magic in autumn gatherings, isn’t there? The crisp air, the vibrant colors, and the irresistible aroma of seasonal treats filling the home. Just a couple of nights ago, I had the pleasure of hosting one of my most cherished annual traditions: Neighborsgiving. It’s a wonderful way to celebrate community and share gratitude, and this year, it was truly spectacular, thanks in large part to my incredible neighbors and a few deliciously simple recipes that made party prep remarkably stress-free. Double the awesomeness, indeed!

The theme for the evening was a casual, Thanksgiving-inspired potluck. With nearly 40 enthusiastic guests confirmed, I knew from past experience that there would be an abundance of incredible food. Many neighbors kindly offered to bring an array of delectable side dishes, which allowed me to focus on creating a welcoming atmosphere and a show-stopping dessert. My contributions included a selection of BotaBoxes for drinks, a large batch of soul-warming homemade apple cider, and some delightful, super-easy cranberry baked brie bites as an appetizer (the recipe for those will be shared very soon!). But for dessert, I turned to an all-time autumn classic, a dish that never fails to bring smiles and comfort:

The Ultimate Easy Apple Crisp: A Naturally Gluten-Free Fall Delight

You simply cannot go wrong with a homemade apple crisp. It’s the quintessential fall dessert, embodying warmth, comfort, and the sweet, tangy flavors of fresh apples. This particular recipe isn’t just easy; it’s also naturally gluten-free and can be easily adapted to be vegan, making it a crowd-pleaser for nearly everyone at your table. Whether you’re hosting a grand holiday feast or simply enjoying a cozy evening at home, this apple crisp recipe is guaranteed to impress with its irresistible crunchy topping and tender, spiced apple filling.

The Inspiration: A Bounty of Fresh Apples

The timing for Neighborsgiving couldn’t have been more perfect. Just last week, a delightful surprise arrived in my mail – a beautiful box of fresh, crisp apples from Harry & David! I practically raced to snatch them from our mailroom before our building manager could get her hands on these tempting beauties. (I’m quite sure I hold the record for the most delicious mail in our entire building!) As soon as I saw them, I knew exactly what their destiny was: a glorious apple crisp.

While I often enjoy improvising with a “little-of-this, little-of-that” approach when making fruit crisps, this occasion called for something tried and true, yet effortlessly adaptable. I decided to put an apple-centric spin on my beloved Easy Blueberry Crisp recipe. It’s a fantastic base because it’s already naturally gluten-free and incredibly delicious. For Neighborsgiving, I made a slight indulgence by opting for melted butter instead of coconut oil, just to add that extra layer of richness for our special gathering. But rest assured, the vegan option with coconut oil is just as delightful and a great choice for those with dietary preferences.

Crafting the Perfect Apple Crisp: Simplicity Meets Flavor

The beauty of this easy apple crisp lies in its simplicity and the vibrant flavors it delivers. It begins with the apples themselves. I love leaving the skins on for both their beautiful color and added nutrients, though you can certainly peel them if you prefer a smoother texture. After coring and dicing them into bite-sized pieces, they get a generous toss with ground cinnamon and a splash of fresh lemon juice. The lemon juice brightens the apple flavor and prevents browning, while the cinnamon infuses them with that unmistakable taste of fall.

Oat and nut topping for apple crisp, mixed with maple syrup and cinnamon, showing a rich, crumbly texture.

Next comes the star of any crisp: the topping! This recipe features a delightful oatmeal-nut topping that strikes the perfect balance between crunchy and chewy. It’s sweetened naturally with maple syrup, enhanced with a hint of extra cinnamon, and made wonderfully gluten-free with the addition of almond meal. If gluten-free isn’t a requirement for you, feel free to substitute the almond meal with an equal amount of all-purpose flour or white whole wheat flour. The combination of old-fashioned oats and chopped pecans or walnuts provides incredible texture and a nutty depth of flavor that perfectly complements the soft, spiced apples below.

Once assembled, it’s off to the oven! I baked it until the topping achieved that coveted golden-brown crispness and the apples beneath were meltingly tender and bubbling with sweet juices. The aroma that fills your kitchen during baking is an experience in itself – a true sensory invitation to autumn.

Serving Perfection: Indulgence or Wholesome Goodness

The moment it came out of the oven, we couldn’t wait to dive in. Just look at that red deliciousness! (Hehe, food humor!) This recipe embodies everything I adore about a comforting apple crisp. It’s blissfully easy to prepare – you can even chop the apples and assemble the topping in advance to save time. The cinnamon spice is perfectly balanced, enhancing the natural sweetness of the apples without overpowering them. And the texture? A dreamy combination of super-crispy topping and super-soft, almost jammy apples. It was an absolute hit at the party, disappearing quickly and garnering rave reviews from all our guests.

A serving of Easy Apple Crisp topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce, ready to be enjoyed.

For an extra touch of indulgence, we served our apple crisp warm with generous scoops of vanilla ice cream and a decadent drizzle of caramel sauce. The contrast of the warm crisp with cold, creamy ice cream is simply divine. However, if you’re aiming for a healthier option, I can assure you that this apple crisp tastes equally incredible on its own. Its natural sweetness and rich flavors shine through beautifully, making it a guilt-free pleasure.

Variations and Tips for Your Best Apple Crisp

  • Apple Varieties: While any apple works, a mix of sweet (Fuji, Gala, Honeycrisp) and tart (Granny Smith) varieties offers the best flavor balance.
  • Spice It Up: Don’t hesitate to add a pinch of nutmeg, allspice, or ginger to the apple filling for more complex warmth.
  • Nut Alternatives: If pecans or walnuts aren’t your preference, feel free to use almonds, hazelnuts, or even pumpkin seeds in the topping.
  • Make Ahead: Prepare the apple filling and the crisp topping separately. Store the apple mixture in the fridge and the topping at room temperature. Assemble and bake just before serving for maximum freshness.
  • Serving Suggestions: Beyond ice cream and caramel, consider serving with a dollop of fresh whipped cream, a spoonful of crème fraîche, or even a dairy-free coconut whipped cream for a vegan alternative.

Description

This Easy Apple Crisp recipe is made with simple ingredients, it’s naturally gluten free (and vegan, if desired), and it’s absolutely delicious!

Ingredients

Scale

  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats (use certified gluten-free oats if making this recipe GF)
  • 1/2 cup almond meal*
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, divided
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup melted butter (or coconut oil, if making this recipe vegan)
  • 4 apples, cored and diced (about 56 cups)
  • 2 teaspoons freshly-squeezed lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Add oats, almond meal, nuts, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and salt to a mixing bowl, and toss until combined.  Add maple syrup and melted butter (or coconut oil), then toss until combined.  Set aside.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the apples, lemon juice and remaining 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and toss until combined.  Spread the apple mixture evenly into a greased 8×8-inch or 9×9-inch pan, then sprinkle the oat mixture evenly on top of the apples.
  4. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is crisp and golden and the apples are soft and cooked through.  Serve immediately.  (I served mine with ice cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce.)
  5. Or let the apple crisp cool to room temperature, then cover and refrigerate for up to 3 days.

Notes

*If you can’t find almond meal at the store, you can pulse almonds in a food processor until fine to make almond meal.  OR, you can substitute in white whole wheat flour (or all-purpose flour) in place of the almond meal.
