While many cocktails have come and gone, the Manhattan has steadfastly remained a beloved choice for over a century. Its origins are steeped in urban legend, with tales pointing to its creation at the Manhattan Club in New York City in the mid-1870s. Whether born from a banquet hosted by Jennie Jerome (Winston Churchill’s mother) or simply a popular invention of a barman, its legacy as a definitive classic cocktail is undisputed. The beauty of the Manhattan lies in its balance and its ability to highlight the complex notes of a good whiskey.

Ingredients
Scale
- 2 ounces bourbon whiskey (or rye whiskey for a spicier kick)
- 1 ounce sweet vermouth (such as Carpano Antica, Martini & Rossi, or Dolin Rouge)
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters (or other aromatic bitters like orange bitters for a twist)
- Ice (large, clear cubes are best for slow dilution)
- Luxardo cherries (optional, but highly recommended for an authentic touch)
This feature helps prevent your screen from dimming or going dark while you’re mixing, ensuring a smooth cocktail-making process.
Instructions for the Perfect Manhattan
- Prepare Your Mixing Glass: Begin by gathering your ingredients: bourbon, sweet vermouth, and bitters. Place a generous handful of ice into a large mixing glass. Using quality ice is crucial as it dilutes slowly and chills your drink efficiently without over-watering.
- Combine Ingredients: Pour the 2 ounces of bourbon whiskey, 1 ounce of sweet vermouth, and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters directly over the ice in your mixing glass. Ensure all liquids are added for the perfect balance.
- Stir and Chill: With a long bar spoon, stir the mixture gently but consistently for about 20-30 seconds. The goal is to properly chill the cocktail and achieve the right amount of dilution. You’ll notice the mixing glass becoming frosty on the outside, indicating optimal chill.
- Prepare Your Glass: While the cocktail chills, prepare your serving glass. A chilled coupe or martini glass is traditional. You can chill it by placing it in the freezer for a few minutes or by filling it with ice water and letting it sit.
- Strain and Garnish: Once chilled, discard the ice water from your serving glass (if applicable). Use a cocktail strainer to strain the perfectly chilled Manhattan mixture into your prepared, chilled cocktail glass. Finish by garnishing with one or two Luxardo cherries. The rich, dark, and slightly tart flavor of Luxardo cherries perfectly complements the Manhattan’s profile, elevating it beyond a simple maraschino.
Beyond the Basic Manhattan: Tips, Tricks & Variations
The beauty of the Manhattan lies in its versatility and its potential for personalization. While the classic bourbon Manhattan is superb, exploring variations can uncover new favorites:
- Rye Manhattan: For a drier, spicier, and more assertive drink, opt for rye whiskey instead of bourbon. This is considered by many to be the original style of Manhattan.
- Perfect Manhattan: This variation uses equal parts sweet vermouth and dry vermouth (0.5 oz each), creating a lighter, less sweet profile. It’s an excellent choice for those who find the classic a bit too rich.
- Dry Manhattan: If you prefer a very dry cocktail, use dry vermouth exclusively instead of sweet vermouth, and a lemon twist for a crisp garnish.
- Garnish Alternatives: While Luxardo cherries are iconic, a twist of orange peel can add a bright, citrusy aroma that beautifully complements the whiskey and vermouth. Simply express the oils over the drink and drop it in (or discard).
- Vermouth Matters: The quality of your sweet vermouth significantly impacts the final taste. Store open vermouth bottles in the refrigerator to prolong their freshness, as vermouth is a fortified wine and can oxidize.
- Ice is Key: Large ice cubes melt slower, leading to less dilution and a colder drink. Consider investing in large ice molds for your home bar.
Mastering the Manhattan is a rewarding experience for any home bartender. It’s a testament to the fact that sometimes, the simplest recipes yield the most profound flavors. With just a few quality ingredients and a keen eye for detail, you can consistently craft a cocktail that delights the senses and stands the test of time.
