Unveiling the Oaxacan Rusty Nail: A Smoky, Spicy, and Irresistibly Smooth Mezcal Cocktail
It feels like an age since I last shared a new cocktail creation on the blog, and honestly, it’s high time to remedy that! Especially when the remedy involves the intriguing complexities of mezcal and an unexpected secret ingredient that has transformed our home bar experience.
My partner, Barclay, and I have found ourselves increasingly drawn to smoky spirits this year. While often that means simply savoring a neat glass of fine scotch or a potent mezcal, there are those evenings when the mood strikes for something a bit more elaborate, a truly mixed drink that tantalizes the palate. And in these moments, one particular concoction has emerged as a clear favorite: our unique mezcal-infused twist on the classic “Rusty Nail.” This delightful discovery was sparked by an unforgettable cocktail we encountered during our recent trip to Omaha, leaving an indelible mark on our taste buds.
The “Luchador’s Inferno”: A Spark of Inspiration in Omaha
During our Omaha adventure, I approached the bartender with my usual request: “Something smoky, but not overly sweet.” His recommendation, a drink named “Luchador’s Inferno,” immediately piqued my interest. The menu promised a blend of habanero-infused mezcal, Drambuie, and orange bitters. With the first sip, I was utterly captivated. The flavors danced on my tongue – a fascinating interplay of spicy heat, the distinctive character of scotch, subtle herbaceous notes, and a touch of honeyed sweetness. I found myself utterly perplexed, trying to decipher what magical component could harmoniously bind these disparate flavors with the fiery mezcal.
The answer, as the bartender soon revealed, was as brilliant as it was simple: Drambuie.
And just like that, Drambuie became my new, indispensable mixer.

Drambuie: The Unexpected Star of Our Cocktail Cabinet
For many seasoned cocktail enthusiasts, Drambuie is likely a well-known secret, but for me, it was an exciting revelation. As the bartender eloquently explained, this exquisite liqueur possesses an incredible versatility, pairing beautifully with spirits across the tequila (and mezcal) and whiskey (and scotch) families. Drambuie is a sweet, golden liqueur crafted from a meticulous blend of aged Scotch whiskies, heather honey, aromatic herbs, and exotic spices. Its flavor profile is profoundly complex and undeniably captivating – a true symphony for the senses.
Naturally, upon returning home from our trip, acquiring a bottle of Drambuie was at the top of my list. Over the past six months, it has become a staple in our cocktail repertoire, enchanting every guest it’s served to. Without fail, each person takes a sip, pauses, tilts their head in thought, and then a smile spreads across their face as they ask, “What is in this drink?!” My standard reply? “Magic,” I playfully respond, knowing full well that Drambuie is the true wizard behind the curtain.

Crafting the Oaxacan Rusty Nail: A Mezcal Masterpiece
Inspired by the “Luchador’s Inferno” and armed with my newfound appreciation for Drambuie, I was eager to recreate that amazing cocktail experience at home. After some delightful experimentation and a bit of research into classic cocktails, I realized that my creation was essentially a mezcal interpretation of the venerable “Rusty Nail.” The traditional Rusty Nail, a timeless classic, typically combines Scotch whisky with Drambuie. My version, however, embraces the unique smoky depth of mezcal, transforming it into something truly special.
To capture the essence of the habanero-infused mezcal from the original inspiration without the arduous infusion process, I opted for a simpler, yet equally effective, approach: muddling a fresh slice of jalapeño directly into the drink. This technique provides a controlled, vibrant spice that can be adjusted to personal preference. To further enhance the aromatic complexity and brighten the profile, I added several dashes of high-quality orange bitters. Finally, for an elegant finish and a burst of citrus aroma, I ran an orange peel around the rim of the glass before twisting and adding it as a garnish. This careful selection of ingredients ensures a harmonious balance of flavors, creating a cocktail that is both sophisticated and incredibly inviting.

The Perfect Harmony: Smoky, Spicy, Citrusy, and Sweet
And oh, my goodness, this drink is an absolute triumph! I am utterly smitten with it, and I’m confident you will be too. The Oaxacan Rusty Nail achieves an exquisite equilibrium of smoky mezcal, a subtle spicy kick from the jalapeño, bright citrus notes from the orange bitters and peel, and a delicate, honeyed sweetness from the Drambuie. It’s a flavor profile that is simultaneously bold and nuanced, offering a truly captivating drinking experience. The Drambuie, with its intricate blend of herbs and spices, introduces those intriguing undertones that make friends and family alike marvel at its depth.
Beyond its complex flavors, one of the greatest appeals of this cocktail is its surprising simplicity. It requires minimal effort and can be prepared in a mere two or three minutes flat. This makes it the ideal choice for an impromptu happy hour, a sophisticated start to an evening, or a delightful nightcap. It’s a testament to the fact that exceptional cocktails don’t always require an extensive list of ingredients or hours of preparation. Super simple, yet profoundly delicious – that’s the essence of the Oaxacan Rusty Nail.
